Connect Search Console to GA4: a practical guide

Google Search Console describes how your pages appear in Google Search. Google Analytics 4 describes the visits and interactions its measurement can observe on your website. Linking them puts related search and landing-page reports in one place, but it does not turn the two tools into the same measurement system.

This guide explains the access you need, the linking steps, the reports you gain and the differences to keep in mind when you compare clicks, sessions and key events.

What each tool can tell you

Search Console reports queries, impressions, clicks, average position and indexing information. GA4 reports measured sessions, page views and interactions, including key events you have configured. GA4 has source and campaign dimensions, but it does not reveal every organic Google query behind a visit.

Many impressions with few clicks can reflect position, search intent, competing results or a weak snippet. Clicks without enquiries can reflect the offer, traffic quality, usability or missing measurement. Treat these patterns as questions to investigate, not automatic diagnoses.

Find the two linked search reports

The integration provides a Google Organic Search Queries report and a Google Organic Search Traffic report. The first helps you examine search queries and Search Console metrics. The second brings search landing-page information beside relevant Analytics behaviour metrics.

  • Start with the pages receiving the most search impressions.
  • Check whether the queries match what those pages offer.
  • Review measurable engagement and key events on the landing pages.
  • Choose one improvement and note the date it went live.

The query report does not support arbitrary combinations with every Analytics dimension. Linking the tools does not identify an individual searcher's query or create a complete user journey. Check the available columns and metric definitions before exporting a comparison.

Why Search Console clicks and GA4 sessions differ

A click in a search result is not the same thing as an Analytics session. A visitor may leave before the tag loads, refuse analytics consent or use a blocker. Multiple clicks can also belong to a single session. Property scope, time zones and reporting dates can introduce further differences.

Search Console also withholds some queries to protect privacy. Its query table therefore does not contain every query contributing to page or property totals. A missing search term is not proof that nobody used it.

Compare the same website, search type and dates. Write down the differences in definitions instead of forcing one total to equal the other. For campaign visits, the UTM naming guide explains how to retain a measured origin without confusing it with proof of causality.

Treat AI visibility as a separate measurement question

Google introduced dedicated generative AI visibility reports in June 2026 and says the rollout reached all websites in August. They cover impressions of URLs in AI features in Search and Discover, with page, country, date and supported device breakdowns. This is visibility reporting, not a complete record of individual searchers or customer outcomes.

A manual sample can record which question was asked, which sources were cited and whether your business appeared. Referral reporting can show some visits when a recognisable referrer reaches your website. Neither method sees every answer shown to every person.

The guide to getting found in Google and AI starts with accessible pages and clear answers, while keeping these measurement limits visible.

A ten-minute monthly review

  1. Compare clicks and impressions over equivalent periods, allowing for reporting delay.
  2. Choose two relevant pages with impressions but few clicks and inspect their queries and positions.
  3. Review one landing page with traffic but no measured next step. Test the form and measurement before rewriting the offer.
  4. Look for new relevant queries that your content does not answer yet.
  5. Check important indexing warnings and write down one action with an owner.

A small site can fluctuate sharply on a few clicks. Use a longer period when needed, and do not attribute every movement to your latest edit. Repeat the review after enough comparable data has accumulated.

Keep search data beside your website findings

Marketing Scan helps you save website findings and decide what to tackle next. Connecting Search Console adds your actual search data; it is optional for the website audit itself. Missing access should remain missing, not be displayed as zero performance.

Frequently asked questions.

Which permissions do I need to connect Search Console to GA4?

Google requires Editor access to the GA4 property and verified ownership of the Search Console property. Link the web stream covering the same website pages.

Why are the Search Console reports missing after linking?

Check Reports, then Library, and publish the Search Console collection if needed. Also allow for reporting delay and confirm that both properties contain the relevant data.

Should Google search clicks equal GA4 sessions?

No. They measure different actions. Consent, blockers, repeated clicks, dates and property scope can all create differences.

Does the query table contain all search terms?

No. Some queries are withheld for privacy. Use the available queries for investigation while keeping their incomplete coverage separate from page and property totals.

Is the link enough to measure all AI visibility?

No. Search Console has dedicated generative AI visibility reports, but appearances, assistant referrals and account registrations remain different measurements. Linking GA4 does not make them a complete individual journey.
