Open Google Analytics, then Search Console, then Google Ads, check your email tool and finally compare sales figures. Anyone doing this monthly knows how quickly half an hour becomes half a day. For small teams, practical figures put marketing-report preparation at 4 to 10 hours weekly.

There is an easier way: one page updating itself and showing within thirty seconds whether you are on track. Looker Studio, Google’s free dashboard tool, does exactly that. This article covers which blocks belong on a small-business dashboard, how to build one in an hour and where to be careful.

In this article

Why a dashboard really changes decisions

The problem with marketing data is not a shortage. According to Gartner, analytics influences only 54 percent of marketing decisions. The rest is instinct, not because data is missing but because nobody has it available in time.

A dashboard lowers the barrier. While answering one question requires opening five platforms, you do not ask it. Once the answer is on one page, you do look. That is the whole point: less friction between question and answer rather than prettier charts.

Belgian small businesses gain particularly much. The FPS Economy reports that 73 percent of small businesses have an online presence, but only 28 percent have a webshop. Most businesses therefore earn revenue through calls, emails and enquiries rather than a checkout reporting itself. Exactly the results you must actively make visible.

What Looker Studio is and what it costs

Looker Studio, formerly Google Data Studio, is a free tool for building browser-based dashboards from your own data. Drag blocks onto a page, choose a data source and you are ready. No installation, no licence.

  • Price: free, with no user limit. Pro costs around 9 dollars per user monthly, mainly adding management and collaboration features an average small business does not need.
  • Data sources: over 20 free connections to Google services such as GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Sheets, BigQuery and YouTube, plus over 800 third-party connections for tools such as Meta Ads, HubSpot or Mailchimp.
  • Important: third-party connections usually cost money, starting at a few dozen euros monthly. To keep things free, use Google sources and supplement the rest through a Google Spreadsheet.

That last technique is underestimated. A simple spreadsheet recording monthly revenue, enquiry numbers and won projects is a perfectly valid data source. It puts real business figures beside website figures, the difference between a traffic report and a marketing report.

Five blocks every small-business dashboard needs

A good dashboard fits on one screen and answers five questions. More blocks only make it longer, not better.

BlockQuestion answeredSource
Monthly conversionsDoes my website deliver more or less than last month?GA4 key events
Conversions by channelWhich channel delivers those results?GA4 acquisition
Best and worst pagesWhich page persuades, and which gets many visits without results?GA4 landing pages
Search terms and clicksWhat does Google find me for, and where do I rank just too low?Search Console
Cost per enquiryWhat do I pay per lead, and is this improving?Google Ads plus your own spreadsheet

Compare each block with the previous period. A number without context says nothing: 84 enquiries is good after 61 and bad after 120. In Looker Studio, that comparison takes one checkbox.

Leave out vanity figures. Followers, impressions and page views do not belong on the first dashboard page. They are interesting when investigating something but distract you when deciding.

Build your first dashboard in an hour

Get started practically:

  1. Go to lookerstudio.google.com and sign in with the Google account having access to your GA4 property and Search Console.
  2. Create a new report and choose the GA4 connection. Select your property. A basic page with standard blocks appears immediately.
  3. Delete those standard blocks and begin with one scorecard for your most important key event. Set the period to this month and tick comparison with the previous period.
  4. Add a table with channel group as dimension and sessions plus key events as metrics. This block will most often tell you something useful.
  5. Add Search Console as a second data source and create a table of search terms, clicks and average position. Filter positions 5 to 20: they offer your quickest SEO gains.
  6. Add a date selector at the top to change periods without editing the report.
  7. Schedule email delivery through Share, then Schedule delivery. It arrives every first Monday of the month, without you having to remember again.

Do not build everything immediately. One page with five blocks you actually inspect is infinitely more useful than eight pages you stop opening after two weeks.

Get the data right before making it attractive

This is the article’s most important section. A dashboard does not improve bad data: it makes it visible faster and more convincing. Check three things before building.

Do key events work? Around 40 percent of GA4 setups contain at least one incorrectly configured event. Submit your own form and inspect DebugView. A zero-valued dashboard usually signals measurement trouble rather than marketing trouble.

Is Direct credible? A rule of thumb calls up to around 25 percent Direct reasonable. Above that, newsletters, QR codes or social posts probably lack UTM labels. Email may appear ineffective simply because it lands in the wrong category.

Is retention correct? Retention affects user/event data for explorations and funnel reports, not standard aggregated reports. Standard properties can use 2 or 14 months. Extensions also apply to existing data not yet deleted; deleted data cannot return. Check GA4 retention rules.

A dashboard does not improve bad data: it makes it more convincing. Check events before charts.

Where the free version stops

Honesty about limits matters. Looker Studio is excellent for small businesses, but not unlimited.

  • Speed with much data. Many blocks and heavy sources slow reports. Limit page blocks and avoid three-year default periods.
  • Data-source quotas. Reports can hit source quotas. For GA4, inspect Analytics Data API token usage and quotas. Google explains quota-error investigation.
  • Paid connections. Meta Ads, LinkedIn or CRM connections usually charge monthly per connector. Weigh saved time.
  • Still a mirror. Looker Studio fixes nothing. Missing tracking remains missing in attractive reports.

Most Belgian small businesses have ample capacity: one page, five blocks, monthly delivery beats searching five platforms.

Frequently asked questions.

Is Looker Studio free?

Yes, the standard version is free without user limits. You only pay for Pro, around 9 dollars per user monthly, or third-party connections such as Meta Ads or your CRM. Google sources and a spreadsheet are usually enough for small businesses to work entirely free.

Which figures belong on my small-business dashboard?

Five blocks suffice: monthly conversions, conversions by channel, best and worst performing pages, Search Console search terms and cost per enquiry. Compare each with the previous period. Leave followers, impressions and page views off your main page.

How much time does a dashboard really save?

Small teams can spend 4 to 10 hours weekly compiling marketing reports manually. A dashboard updating automatically and arriving monthly in your inbox removes most of that. The real gain is looking more often and therefore adjusting sooner.

Can I combine revenue figures with website data?

Yes, that is exactly what makes dashboards useful. Create a Google Spreadsheet with monthly revenue, enquiry numbers and won projects, and connect it as an additional source. Alongside visitor figures, you see what they actually delivered.

My dashboard shows zero conversions. What now?

Usually this is a measurement problem, not a marketing problem. First check that GA4 key events are marked and actually arrive: test your own form while watching DebugView. Around 40 percent of GA4 setups contain at least one incorrectly configured event.
